How to Use the USAJOBS Website (3/23/09)
As part of the new federal economic stimulus package, we have heard that there is a strong possibility that federal government agencies may be hiring safety and health professionals this year. Positions could be anywhere in the nation, including the Chicago area. In order to help our members who may be looking for jobs, here are some tips on locating and applying for federal positions.
Step One - Create a resume at usajobs web site
All federal hiring is done through application online at www.usajobs.opm.gov. Applicants must have a resume on file at this web site to apply for a position announcement. Federal job announcements are typically open 1-2 weeks. If you aren’t ready with your resume and miss the window of an announcement, you miss applying for that particular job.
- Go to: http://www.usajobs.opm.gov
- Click on Myusajobs
- Create an account
- Click on MY Resumes and create a resume in usajobs.
When applying for a vacancy, pay close attention to "How To Apply" instructions. You will submit your resume through usajobs, answer vacancy specific questions, and supply additional documents.
If you don’t follow application instructions TO THE LETTER, you will not make the candidate list. Application instructions vary by agency and by region of the country; each instruction can be different thus you must read the details in each announcement.
Step Two – Create a search agent to notify you when vacancies are announced
- Go to: http://www.usajobs.opm.gov
- Log into your account
- My job search agent: You may create a search which automatically emails you with job vacancies when your search parameters are met. For example, you can ask the system to email all federal job openings in Illinois.
- Individual search
- Real time searches can be done without logging into your usajobs account.
- Click on "Search Jobs" tab
- Example: click on "Series Search"
- Enter 0018 in Series Number Search (0018 is the safety specialist series)
- Enter 0690 in Series Number Search (0690 is the industrial hygienist series)
Check the basic requirements for IH as they include a lot of chemistry and science.
If you wish to apply for a specific job, click on the "Apply Online" button at the bottom of the page for that position announcement.
